Is Stone-Coated Steel Worth the Extra Money?
Stone-coated steel is not the budget option. On many projects, a premium system can cost substantially more than composition shingles and may approach roughly twice the upfront price. The long-term question is whether you expect to buy another roof while you own the home.

How Does Stone-Coated Steel Handle North Texas Hail?
For a hail-prone market, this is usually the question that matters most. TEK HURRICANE Metal Shake and Metal Shake PRO are listed as UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated systems, the highest classification used for this impact-resistance test.
We have inspected stone-coated steel roofs after storms reported to have produced hail around 2½ inches and, on some roofs around 6/12 pitch and steeper, found no functional hail damage. That is real field experience—not a guarantee. No roof is hail-proof, and cosmetic denting or surface effects can still occur.
TEK's warranty includes hail-damage provisions, subject to the exact definitions, conditions and exclusions in the manufacturer warranty. If you are comparing systems, we recommend reviewing the warranty itself rather than relying on a one-line “hail-proof” claim.
Is It Really a 50-Year Roof?
For TEK HURRICANE systems, the manufacturer provides a 50-year limited warranty and currently describes the product line as having a 50+ year lifespan. As with any roof, installation quality, ventilation, maintenance, environment and the exact product matter.
There is also long-term evidence for the broader stone-coated steel category. DECRA has documented an Ottawa stone-coated steel roof installed in 1978 that remained in service more than four decades later, including through harsh Canadian winters.
Manufacturer case studies are not a promise that every roof will perform identically, but they are useful evidence when comparing a long-life metal system with a roof designed around a shorter replacement cycle.
Can Stone-Coated Steel Go Over Existing Asphalt Shingles?
Yes—sometimes. TEK installation guidance allows HURRICANE panels over a maximum of one existing layer of asphalt shingles when the existing deck is acceptable and local building requirements are met.
Alliance Metal Roofing generally considers a complete tear-off the best practice when practical because removing the old roof lets us inspect the entire deck, replace damaged wood and start with a clean roofing assembly. But a properly approved layover can reduce tear-off cost, disposal, mess and project time.
The important distinction is that “it can be installed over shingles” does not mean every house should be. Deck condition, existing layers, slope, penetrations, flashing conditions and the manufacturer's installation method all need to be checked first.
What Should You Know Before Choosing Stone-Coated Steel?
A trustworthy comparison should include the tradeoffs. Stone-coated steel solves a lot of problems, but it is not simpler in every category.
Foot Traffic Matters
Some stone-coated steel profiles can dent if someone walks in the wrong locations. TEK's HURRICANE systems use foam components to add support and insulation, but anyone servicing the roof should still understand the product and proper walking areas.
Solar Takes the Right Hardware
Solar can be installed on stone-coated steel, but the mounting system should attach correctly to the roof structure using product-appropriate brackets—not simply punch through the face of a metal panel. TEK publishes solar-bracket recommendations, and an experienced solar crew matters.
Read Cosmetic-Damage Exclusions
Some insurers may pair an impact-resistant roof discount with a cosmetic-damage exclusion. In plain English: if hail changes how the roof looks but it still functions, appearance-only damage may not be covered. Review the endorsement with your agent before accepting it.
It Is More Specialized
Asphalt shingles are familiar to almost every roofing crew. Stone-coated steel requires more product-specific knowledge for flashing, accessories, repairs, solar and future penetrations. Choosing an installer familiar with the system matters more.
No, It Doesn't Sound Like a Barn
One of the most common questions we get is whether rain sounds loud on a metal roof. In our experience, a stone-coated steel roof over a normal residential roof assembly is not noticeably louder than a composition roof inside the home. The deck, underlayment, attic insulation and foam components all help dampen impact noise.
The Initial Price Is the Biggest Barrier
If the only goal is the lowest price today—or you expect to move soon enough that long-term value is unlikely to matter—architectural asphalt shingles may still be the more practical financial choice.
